TURQUOISE: Meaning & Properties

▸ HISTORY

Turquoise is an opaque, blue-to-green mineral that is a hydrated phosphate of copper and aluminum. It is rare and valuable in finer grades and has been prized as a gemstone and ornamental stone for thousands of years owing to its unique hue.
The gemstone has been known by many names. Pliny the Elder referred to the mineral as Callais (from Ancient Greek κάλαϊς) and the Aztecs knew it as chalchihuitl.

The word turquoise dates to the 17th century and is derived from the French turquois for "Turkish" because the mineral was first brought to Europe through Turkey, from mines in the historical Khorasan Province of Persia.

▸ MEANING

Picture
Turquoise has an extremely long history of use by kings, shamans, and warriors for protection and good fortune.
The ancient Egyptians, Mesoamericans, Native Americans, and Tibetans have believed in the special powers of turquoise for centuries. Some believed that turquoise can protect its wearer from harm, whilst others thought that it brought good luck or longevity. The ancient Persians believed that the blue stone would help overcome the Evil Eye.
Tradition says that this stone reflects the health of the body and the aura by changing color.

▸ PROPERTIES

Nowadays, turquoise is believed to offer protection and to be helpful for careers and travel. It is thought to facilitate leadership and clear communication. Turquoise is related to feelings of peace and balance, especially the balance of male and female. Turquoise's power clarifies the perception of beauty and encourages kindness and trust. Turquoise healing properties inspire self-forgiveness and self-acceptance while encouraging the release of pointless regrets as reflected in turquoise meaning.

As a stone of purification, Turquoise dispels negative energy and clears electromagnetic smog from the environment. It promotes self-realization and aids in creative problem-solving, thus calming the nerves when speaking in public. It helps to stabilize mood swings and dissolves any martyred attitude or self-sabotage. Turquoise gemstones are said to support the pursuit of new romantic love and spontaneous romance.

▸ ASSOCIATIONS

In traditional Hindu belief systems, turquoise is associated with clearing Ajna, or the third eye chakra and Vishuddha, or the throat chakra.
In feng shui, turquoise carries water energy.  Water energy represents the circle of life energies with a focus on rebirth and regeneration.
Turquoise benefits can be realized in any area of the home that is often used for prayer or calm reflection and repose. Turquoise stones are traditionally placed at the north end of a room or home.
