NEPHRITE - JADE: Meaning & Properties

▸ HISTORY

Jade or “yu” (meaning precious stone) as it is called in China, is the family name for Jadeite and Nephrite. The name nephrite is derived from lapis nephriticus, which in turn is derived from Greek λίθος νεφριτικός; νεφρός λίθος, which means 'kidney stone' and is the Latin and Greek version of the Spanish piedra de ijada (the origin of "jade" and "jadeite"). Accordingly, nephrite jade was once believed to be a cure for kidney stones.

▸ MEANING

It is said that in Chinese tradition, Jade symbolized all five virtues of humanity: Wisdom, Compassion, Justice, Modesty, and Courage, that's why often symbols of these virtues were carved into pieces of Jade.  Nephrite today is believed to be a stone of dreams. Jade is the stone of spiritual wealth and it is thought that it can bless whatever it touches.

​Jade is said to encourage self-realization and help to recognize yourself as a spiritual being. It is believed to instill prosperity in all areas of your life. It helps bring healing and serenity into life. It is a very lucky gemstone that creates peace and harmony between the mind, body, and spirit, which makes your goals more easily attainable.  Jade is said to promote courage, compassion, wealth and longevity, leading to a richer and more fulfilling life.

​Jade is known as the Anniversary Stone for the 12th year. It doesn’t belong either to the traditional or the modern birthstones chart. Some people associate it with the astrological sign of Virgo and Taurus because both signs are earth elements.
